Mighty No.9 New Funding Misconceptions

In an effort to help clear up misconceptions about the Mighty No.9 new anime project and new funding, I am writing this blog to share what I have found out about it and to address my early tweets about it. Hopefully, this might help others understand what's up.

My first reaction to the new funding was a negative one. One of the most successful kickstarter campaigns was asking for more money? How dare they? $4M wasn't enough?

It turns out that I didn't take the time to read the information provided at

I apologize to the Mighty No.9 team for jumping to early conclusions and adding to the misconceptions. I should add that no one from the Mighty No.9 team has asked me to write this blog post. I just feel like this is the right thing to do.

Here's my take on what's up:

Anime Project: Digital Frontier approached Comcept about making the Mighty No.9 anime. No money from the original KS has or will be spent on it. Perhaps waiting until the game was near-finished would have been better timing, but it is separate from the development of the game in every way.

New Funding: This is a way to acheive two things, 1. Allow new backers to pre-order the game, and 2. Use those funds to add additional content to the game.

The original KS campaign is covering the cost of development of the originally promised game. These new opportunities offer the potential of new content.

I hope this helps in some small way.

  1. I'm already tired of people thinking Inafune/Comcept is being greedy. They KNOW what they're doing, people. This is basically allowing what some people failed to do last year: Donate.

  2. Well, I knew right off the bat it was new stretch goals for additional content. My problem is with the additional content.

First off, Its all a complete mystery. Throw your money into the mystery box!! What are you onna get?!!! Not very appealing to me.

The only thing I DO know about this new money going towards, I am not happy about whatsoever. Full English voice acting? Very expensive, completely unnecessary, and adds absolutely nothing whatsoever to the game itself. I recall megaman going to hell in a handbasket when such a huge focus was put on superficial nonsense like this instead of actual game design.

I prefer my games to be designed according to a principle of sufficient reason. From what I have seen so far, there is not sufficient reason for this kind of money to be spent on this kind of project, for this kind of feature.

    I wont be supporting it.

    1. Actually this is a kind of pre-order, people can purchase the game before it's released, and the money they get on the pre-order will be used on game development, something that usually doesn't happens on other pre-orders.

    2. I really don't care about the stretch goals, just bought it because I really want the game and I like what I'm seeing now that there is actual footage. Frankly, I don't think it will get much following anyway. Also, preorders that are only the game DO NOT count for funding.

  3. well, having great ideas about the information to read.
